Erdene is committed to continually improving the lives of those who work for us, partner with us and host us in their communities. Our goal is to earn the trust of the communities where we work by making a positive contribution to their sustainable economic development.

We place a priority on hiring local workers where we can, and we are always eager to assist in supporting local community development projects.  Our management team and Community Development Officer (CDO) have developed strong relationships with local, provincial and state levels of government.

Erdene’s sustainable development program is driven by company policies derived from the philosophy of providing resources that support capacity building in the communities in which the company works, particularly those communities in rural Mongolia.  Priority funding categories in Erdene’s community development program include education, health and secure livelihoods with the goal of improving the quality of social services in these remote regions of Mongolia.

In association with our more advanced projects, which receive a higher degree of funding, Erdene forms a community liaison committee to ensure that the interests of the community are fully represented.  The committee comprises local government officials, community members, education and health representatives and a Company representative who acts as chairperson.  This committee decides where the community development funding should be allocated based on goals established to develop and improve education, health and secure livelihoods.  Erdene’s CDO regularly visits the community to ensure all donated materials are used for their intended purposes and that training programs are initiated.

An evaluation of Erdene’s community development program and effective capacity building based on observation and interviews of individuals affected by the intervention is conducted annually. Erdene is proud to have a positive impact on the lives of many children and their families, contributing towards an improved quality of life and the chance of a better future through our community development program.

Erdene is committed to the highest standards of environmental stewardship and our objective is to minimize our environmental footprint. Erdene files an environmental protection and reclamation plan with the Governor of each district in which we operate in Mongolia, and we work to ensure those plans exceed requirements. In North America, we are working with our partners to ensure best practices are met and exceeded for all environmental concerns regarding our development projects and that the communities in which these projects are located benefit from the sustainable economic development our projects generate.
